Abstract: Miniature mobile robots, ranging in size from a penny (≈10 mm) to a single cell (≈10 µm), offer transformative potential for advancing minimally invasive procedures in surgically complex and sensitive areas of the human body. In this talk, I will present a holistic approach to designing micro- and millirobots aimed at addressing critical unmet medical needs with new, safer, and more effective solutions. First, I will describe the additive manufacturing of biocompatible and biodegradable robots constructed from a variety of extracellular biopolymers. Second, I will demonstrate their image-guided delivery and retrieval via standard catheters under physiological conditions. Third, I will demonstrate real- time navigation, localization, and tracking of these robots under fluoroscopic guidance, enhanced by virtual techniques, within physiological phantoms, ex-vivo live perfused tissues, and live small animal models. Finally, I will share preliminary findings on the interactions between these robots and live tissues. I will conclude by exploring how future operating rooms can seamlessly integrate miniature robot systems to accelerate and maximize their impact on healthcare.
