Internships, Careers, and Employment

Internships

The School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering has made a commitment to connecting students with internship opportunities, in their specific field of interest through the SBHSE internship program, available exclusively to BME majors. Internships provide numerous positive outcomes including: application of academic concepts to real-world situations; knowledge of workplace collaboration, etiquette, and communication; and preparation for the next step after graduation. In addition to this program, students also have access to the suite of career services, available through the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering Career Center.

Resume writing assistance

Resumes are essential at all stages of your career, whether you are a first-year student or near graduation and looking for your first post-graduation employment. The earlier you begin to build your resume, the better equipped you will be throughout your career when opportunities arise. Debbi Howard provides students with support on resume and cover letter writing.

Career development

A degree in biomedical engineering is a valuable asset. The degree lends itself well to flexibility – students who earn a biomedical engineering degree, primarily choose to pursue careers in medicine, research, academia, law, or engineering. The wide variety of career options that are available to students who obtain a degree in biomedical engineering, make it a particularly appealing degree to students, which includes the starting salary and capacity to make a difference for the growing healthcare industry.

Biomedical engineering prepares high-quality graduates with a broad-based education that readies them for productive employment, graduate studies, or professional programs. Graduates find jobs in human and animal medicine and medical devices, biotechnology and related biology-based engineering fields, nanotechnology, robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), sales and marketing of medical devices, patent and trademark law, and various engineering areas, to name a few.  Graduates are able to apply their skills in an ethical, sustainable, and environmentally responsible manner to make contributions that address societal and individual needs.

Networking

Building your business network is an incredibly important tool throughout college years, as well as during your entire career. Get an early start on this and join the events below hosted by The School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering each year. These events are in addition to the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering Career Fairs, and other Fulton professional development events.

SBHSE BioMixer (held every fall)

The BioMixer is an opportunity for biomedical engineering students and faculty to meet with industrial and clinical partners to discuss internship and job opportunities, as well as share information about their company. This event is a great way to expand your engineering network while gaining valuable experience, connecting with seasoned professionals, and learning about opportunities.

BME Career Fair (held annually, in late January)

The BME Career Fair is an event held specifically for biomedical engineering students seeking employment positions and internships. This event provides opportunities to practice your professional networking skills and may include on-site interviews.
